Dick's Comment:

SF Nelson's last Upcoming Events for 2008 with Christmas and holiday time fast approaching and I struggle to turn my attention to write a comment for this end of year issue.  It seems too early to start reflecting on the past year, that seems best left to Christmas and the period before the New Year. However I have some very fond and satisfying recollections of SF Nelson efforts and results over this year.
Amongst these are the many activities undertaken by our organisation; the Carer's Writing workshops which have provided so much inspiration to many attending, the work of our two Fieldworkers with families and whanau experiencing the stresses of mental illness in their families, the value of information in these newsletters, the social events such as the "Wednesday and Thursday Clubs" and the highlight being the value of showing the film "Canvas", with writer and producer Joe Greco present, to families and mental health clinicians.  Also the many informal friendships and caring links that develop between families and whanau as a result of association with SF Nelson, these are supportive friendships amongst people who share a common experience and in these can talk and seek support with people who understand the family experience of mental illness.  These "fond recollections" are due to the good work of our small staff, Renee, Susan and Michael, to the efforts of our committee, volunteers and members, thank you.

Now for those Christmas Wishes, recognizing that emotions over Christmas can be rather mixed and I think especially so for those with such things as a mental illness in the family.  Let's make this Christmas a celebration of the good fortune we have and consider the fact that, to live in NZ we are amongst the luckiest people in the world and reflect on the love, friendships and good fellowship we enjoy.  Positive thoughts will help lead us to positive emotions for Christmas.  And if on reflection we feel something may be missing then, we have the opportunity of making a New Year resolution.

"MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL"

Dick Brown
Chairman

Michael's comment:

I want to express my gratitude and appreciation to all those who sent messages and cards and those who phoned offering support when I was hospitalised earlier this year, and since then.  I now anticipate that I will need to retire early in the New Year because of my ongoing health issue, though I hope to continue working as long as I am able.  I am also hoping that many of the families and individuals I have worked with over the years may have time to attend the upcoming Christmas BBQ on December 4th as I would like to personally thank many of you for what each of you has taught me over the years, and for the many ways in which you have inspired and sustained my efforts as branch fieldworker.
If you are unable to attend I do wish you, and all those near and dear to you, a peaceful and memorable holiday season and a summer of sunshine and much contentment.

Michael Lynch, Fieldworker
